Suitable Toxic Gas Detection
In
support of its commitment to workplace safety, General Monitors is pleased
to announce that its TS4000 and TS400 Toxic Gas Detector product lines
are now both rated SIL 2 suitable. Process and plant engineers in hazardous
industries now have a complete suite of toxic gas, combustible gas and
flame monitoring products available from General Monitors that are rated
SIL 2 or 3 suitable.
The global
importance of SIL (Safety Integrity Levels) has grown substantially
in the oil/gas, petrochemical and other process industries over the
last 10 years. However, for many end users, systems integrators, and
product vendors, SIL is still a somewhat ambiguous concept that often
is misinterpreted and incorrectly implemented. In order to fully understand
SIL and its implications, it is important to grasp the overarching concept
known as Functional Safety, and how it applies to Safety Instrumented
Systems (SIS) within the process industries.
To promote
a better understanding of SIL and SIS, General Monitors has developed
a special online SIL Resource Center. The resource center contains our
Statement of SIL Conformity, a list of General Monitors SIL Suitable
Products, SIL FAQs, Common SIL Myths, SIL Technical Articles and a list
of useful SIL links.
SIL 2 Suitable TS4000 Toxic Gas Detector
The TS4000 Toxic Gas Detector has been third-party certified
for SIL 2 applications and is approved by CSA, ATEX, CE Marking and
GOST. With its sophisticated design, the TS4000 offers many advanced
features, including long distance remote mounting up to 2,000 feet,
dual redundant MODBUS communications, 8 Amp relays, three-digit display,
4-20 mA output, and an indication of remaining sensor life.
The TS4000
Detector provides complete status and control capability in the control
room. Additionally, the interface module’s galvanically-isolated,
intrinsically-safe design supports sensor field replacement without
special tools or hot work permits. All electronics are contained within
an explosion-proof housing so that sensor information can be processed
at the sensor site.
Easy to
install, the TS4000 features one-person calibration and can virtually
self-calibrate by activating a magnetic switch and applying gas. Process
engineers who need to protect people and equipment will find the TS4000
Toxic Gas Detector ideal for chemical, oil and gas, water and wastewater
treatment, pulp and paper, and other hazardous environments. Additional
applications include public utilities, refineries, pharmaceuticals,
and food and beverage.
The TS4000
monitors a variety of toxic gases in the parts per million (ppm) range,
including ammonia, carbon monoxide, chlorine, chlorine dioxide, hydrogen
chloride, hydrogen sulfide, nitric oxide, nitrogen dioxide, oxygen,
ozone, and sulfur dioxide. The system displays gas concentrations up
to 500 ppm, fault codes for troubleshooting, prompts when calibration
is needed, and provides complete status to the user. Additionally, the
TS4000 simplifies operation and maintenance and reduces downtime by
indicating remaining sensor life.

SIL 2 Suitable TS400 Toxic Gas Detector
The space-saving TS400 Toxic Gas Detector continuously monitors 10 common
industrial gases in the ppm (parts per million) range and is one of
the industry’s smallest packages offering highly reliable protection
while offering ease of installation, lower maintenance and extended
life.
The compact Model TS400 (1.75 in. diameter and 4.5 in. long) fits within
the palm of your hand. It weighs only 8 oz and its smaller size allows
fixed placement in crowded plant conditions where other larger detectors
will not fit. In addition to SIL 2 suitability, the TS400 features universal
product approvals including CSA, C-UL, UL, ATEX and CE Marking.
The Model TS400's innovative modular gas sensor design is based on electrochemical
cell technology. The gases detected by the Model TS400 are: ammonia
(0-50 ppm, 0-100 ppm), carbon monoxide (0 to 100 ppm, 0 to 500 ppm),
chlorine (0 to 10 ppm), chlorine dioxide (0 to 3 ppm), hydrogen chloride
(0 to 20 ppm), hydrogen sulfide (0 to 100 ppm), nitric oxide (0 to 100
ppm), nitrogen dioxide (0 to 20 ppm), ozone (0 to 1 ppm), and sulfur
dioxide (0 to 20 ppm).
With its built-in LCD indicator on the detector itself or with the optional
field mounted display, the Model TS400 continuously monitors for (and
displays) fault conditions, calibration and data memory errors. The
advanced adjustment free calibration design reduces maintenance costs
over the life of this detector.
Surface-mount transmitter electronics are contained in a lightweight,
corrosion-resistant polypropylene housing in order to process all information
locally. The TS400 provides a linear 4-20mA analog output signal that
easily connects to control hardware, such as PLCs or computer-based
systems. The two-wire loop powered design reduces installation costs.
The TS400's optional field mounted display makes local visual readout
easy, providing additional safety monitoring for employees or equipment.
With its heavy-duty industrial package, the TS400 is ideal in the harsh
operating environments found in chemical processing, water or wastewater
treatment, pulp and paper, electronics, food and beverage, electric
utilities, pharmaceuticals, textiles, and more.
