Detecting Combustible and Toxic Gases in HVAC Ducts Air handling systems are used throughout industry to provide comfort and health in manned areas. How to Select a Flame Detector Process and plant engineers in the oil and gas industry and a wide range of other hazardous process and manufacturing industries require continuous flame monitoring equipment to prevent catastrophic fires. In order to select such detection equipment, users should understand the principles of flame detection and review the types of detectors available today. Armed with this knowledge they will be better able to match the appropriate flame detector to process and site performance requirements and to the type of hazard whose consequences the instrument is designed to mitigate. New Point IR Calibration Tools Now Available We are pleased to announce that a new Remote Gas Calibrator is available for the IR400 Infrared Gas Detector. Since some gases are lighter than air, it is common to install IR gas detectors in ceilings, ducts, and other spaces where gas accumulation occurs. Performing routine maintenance on these devices is often difficult, requiring scaffolding, ladders, or lifts to bring technicians to the detectors. The RGC-IR now makes it a lot easier to calibrate remote mounted infrared gas detectors. It permits users to test and calibrate the IR400 and its predecessor, the IR2100, from as far away as 100 feet (31 meters)! The RGC-IR does not affect sensor response, as evidenced by T50 response times of 6 - 7 seconds and T90 response times of 10 seconds and is suitable for operation at maximum air velocities of 13 meters/second (30 miles/hour). Flame Detectors with HART® Communications The FL3100H UV/IR and FL3101H UV Flame Detectors are now compatible with the HART® communication protocol. Enabling the FL3100H UV/IR and FL3101H UV Flame Detectors with HART enhances the productivity and available data of these instruments, thereby improving safety. Standard HART commands make it simple for systems to configure and adjust the flame detectors to the particular requirements of the plant. The flame detector, for example, can be tagged with a name for greater ease of use (ex. “Reactor 1 flame detector”). Alarm and warning set points can be adjusted, delay times set, and alarms acknowledged or reset by simply sending a command. Such real-time, continuous access to device variables improves control. A Straightforward Approach To SIL Certification As we have discussed in previous articles and papers, the concept of functional safety is a confusing one. Unfortunately, the IEC 61508 and IEC 61511 standards are not easy to read and are open to interpretation. This results in a plethora of third-party companies and so-called experts making their own judgment on the appropriate implementation of these standards. While one could argue both for and against the approach of using a third-party to issue a certification to these standards, the fundamental problem is that there is room for debate. Because several gases that are the byproduct of petroleum production are lighter than air, it is common to install combustible gas monitors in ceilings, turbines, ducts, and other spaces where gas accumulation occurs. Impact of gas detection coverage on SIF SIL Rating Selecting the technology and knowing where to place gas detectors for maximum coverage effectiveness are probably the two most critical decisions for any fire and gas system (FGS) designer. A wrong choice of technology coupled with an inappropriate positioning of the gas detector may render the gas detection loop completely ‘blind’ to nearby gas leaks.
